The City’s Healthy Chino program was awarded both the prestigious Helen Putnam Award for Excellence and the Cities Counties Schools Partnership Award yesterday afternoon, during the open session of the League of California Cities annual conference.

"We have really started something here," said Mayor Dennis Yates.  "This is one of our fastest growing and most popular programs and as a City, we are excited to be at the forefront of a healthy movement that will improve the lives of our residents.  I am very happy Healthy Chino has received these awards and I hope this challenges other cities to start similar programs within their communities," said the Mayor.

Beginning with an initial planning grant and three subsequent grants from California Healthy Cities and Communities, private sponsorships, and tremendous support from the City Council, Healthy Chino is now in its third year of existence.  Healthy Chino continues to grow within the community and is changing lives.

With the goal of increasing the quality of life for Chino residents, Healthy Chino focuses on five areas:  safe and walkable neighborhoods, nutrition, health and human services, public education and physical activity.  Offering programs and services in these areas, Healthy Chino is a huge success with residents who are involved and making healthy changes in their lives

The Healthy Chino Coalition was created in 2005 in response to the dramatic increase in obesity rates amongst both children and adults which has been linked to a variety of health concerns including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and strokes to name a few.   The Coalition is made up of community leaders, schools, businesses, medical professionals, churches, service organizations and dedicated residents who all work together to reverse the dangerous health trends that have effected so many communities across our nation.

What is a healthy community?:
-     Promote positive physical, social and economic environments that support the well-being of its members.
Embrace the belief that health is more than merely the absence of disease.
-     Include elements that enable people to maintain a high quality of life and productivity.
-     Offer access to health care services that focus on both treatment and prevention for all members of the community.

Healthy Chino Coalition:
The Healthy Chino Coalition is comprised of community leaders, schools, businesses, churches, service organizations, and concerned individuals who are working together to provide healthy options for children, youth, and adults living in Chino.  The Coalition was formed in response to the health epidemic affecting the nation in hopes of improving the quality of life for Chino residents.

During the next few years, the Healthy Chino Coalition will focus on fostering supportive environments, policies, and programs to promote physical activity, wellness and increased knowledge of healthy lifestyles.

The Coalition has adopted a whole-person approach to health by identifying the following five key focus areas:

Fitness
Health & Human Services
Nutrition
Public Education
Safe & Walkable Neighborhoods

As the Healthy Chino Coalition we endeavor to create a safe and active community space wherein we address the needs of our diverse population with a broad range of choices and services.
